CORONER'S INQUEST.
Sulclfto WhiloofUasoundlillnd. . MrH. W. Robinson, District Gotoner, held an inquest at the Welling* ton Morgue yesterday morning, before a jury, of whioh Mr Edward Hutchingß was foreman, on the body of 'Margaret Ann Black, whose body was found in the harbour near the Mana.vatu Railway Station on Saturday morning by a labourer named Sergantini Powell. Dr Pollen de.. posed that on examination he had found no marks of violence on the body; the appearance of tho body L was' characteristic of death from drowning. Deceased had her boots and stockings on, a dressing gown, and small fur jacket, but no underclothing. Mrs Amelia Brown, living at Pipitea Point, stated that alio was * a neighbour of deceased and knew her very intimately. On Friday night deceased, who was living quite alone, seemed very low spirited, and aski'd witness to come and sleep with her, This witness said she was unable to do, and deceased then told her that if she did not she would dWn herself or do something to herself. Witness told her to come into Iter house if she felt lonely, l>ut deceased did not accept the offer. The following morning witness went into deceased's house and found the doors wide open, and the lamp burning. A bottle which hnd con* lained clilorodyue was standing on the drawers, quite empty; the house was untidy, and it eeemed as if the deceased had been burning a lot of papers in the firegrato, and her I clothes which she was in the habit of | wearing were lying about the room, Deceased had been very low spirited ever since a tenant who occnpiedpart of ber house left about a fortnight ago, and witness thought her money matters troubled her. She was a married woman, living apart from her husband. At the beginning of last week deceased had told witness that she would do away with herself, as everyone had turned against her and she bad nothing to live for. Dr Pollen, recalled, said chlorodyne had an exciting, followed by a depressing, effect, and would tend to increase depression of spirits, Other evidence having been given as to deceased haying threatened to do away with herself, the jury returned a verdict of suicide while of unsound mind.— Timet.
