CORRESPONDENCE.
Tio Hoooat laquost. 110 THB EDITOR.] Sir,—lt is generally reported that the Coroner, Mr A. W. Renall, proBiding fit the inquest on.lho death or the late W. L, LuofiEa, after summing up to the jury, actually remained with them during their retirement nnd took part in their deliberations. Surely this cannot lie true? Was ever such a thing heard of before I Imagine a Judge retiring with a jury I If the Coroner was guilty of saoh an act, a very gr&vo scandal has been perpetrated, Fortunately, in the case in question, the evidence was too clear to place the verdict beyond doubt, and the jury wa9 too independent and sensiblo to bo influenced by tlio Coroner alter retirement. What result might, howew, follow if the Coroner were to be allowed to harangue a weak jury during theii deliberations it is not difficult to foresee. Mr lieimll will, I trust, in the interests of the public, give a satisfactory explanation of his conduct.—l am, etc., Enquired
