I He had been Mayor several times, and was generally supposed to be in a good financial position, He went to Auck-» land some weeks ago, ostensibly on buaineas, and letters have since been received from him at Sydney, stating that he did not intend to return, and forwarding details of property. Steps are being .taken to mjjjte ; him a bankrupt, In one letter Mr Brown ascribal his smash to dabbling in politics, Si thiß is not bolioved to be the real reason. He has left his family with very little.: ■
1.15 p.m. At a meeting of A, W. Brown's oreditors it was resolved to take steps to make him bankrupt. The debtor forwarded from Sydney a - statement abowing a surplus, It is believed that the estate will.piy at least 16s in the £ ; in fact Brown was not necessarily bankrupt at all unless undiscovered claims arise. The Mokau Goal Company are going into liquid' ation. Brown was Chairman. •
