THE PAHIATUA BISCUITS.

Strychnlao Discovered-

It would .almost seem as if some

imitators of the Italian Borgias had ;pf. taken up their lesidenoe in the Palliatua district. Following closely upon the sensational poisoning by arsenio of the wedding guests on Boxing Day, there came the report that a settler and his wife, living a few miles beyond the township, had been led hy a strange bitterness in somo homemade biscuits to refrain from eating them, and that a dog, to which a portion was subsequently given, had died from the effects. Some of those biscuits were sent to the Government Analyst to be-examined,' and we now understand thai-strychnine was discovered in them in sufficient quantity to have proved fatal had a number of the biscuits been eaten. Strangely enough portions of the uncompounded ingredients obtained from the same places where the mixed ingredients of the bisouits were obtained, were also tested without any trace of stryoanine being fonnd in them, The settler's wife, who baked the biscuits as well as her husband, says that there was no strychnine about the Lj place. How, then, it got into those fa particular biscuits is an enigma that the police must cudgel their wits and apply their energies to solve. The settler and bis wife have only been married three months, the lady having come out from Home in order to enter the estate of matrimony.— Times.
