TOWN LANDS TRUST.

A special meeting of the Mastorton Town Lands Trustees was held last evening to consider the applications for assistance on behalf of George Barron and Gwendoline Powell, who gained scholarships at the recont examination. Present—Messrs Win, Lowes (chairman), A. W. Renall, Gapper, Eton, Graham, and Perry. The head master wrote supporting the applications, especially mentioning the girl Gwendoline Powell. The Chairman said the state of the fund showed a balance to the end of the year (March 31st) of £63185, He had had a conversation with Mrs Marley (the girl's aunt) and thought the case deserving, Mr Eton thought that where ability was shown in cases where parents' means would not permit them to afford the necessary money, grants should be made when the funds permitted,

Mr Gapper moved that £2O be granted. In reply to Mr Perry the Chairman said the scholarship was worth £BO. The total cost of it would be at least £6O to the girl. Mr Eton seconded Mr (tapper's motion. Mr Perry said he considered Ihe case most deserving, and would move as an amendment that the amount granted be. £25, if the funds would permit. The Chairman said the income from the acres set apart was £2B per annum, after managerial expenses' were deducted. It was, however competent on them to take from the general fund. There was also another application to be considered, Mr Perry's amendment not being seconded the original motion was put and carried. The next application, that of Mr Barron in favor of his son George, was thee considered,
