MR. JACKMAN.
History of the Browors' Prlond.
The Manawatu Standard gives the following account of the brewer's " friend " or fiend, Mr Jackman : m It may be interesting to point, out IB that out of 44 brewers charged with broaches of the Act by Mr Jackman, 41 have been convicted, fines amounting in the aggregate to i 3897 being imposed, the highest individual fine, LIOO, having been paid in Wsstport. As Mr Jackman has come into prominence bo much of late, a short sketch "* of his career may bo interesting, At 11 years of age lie left school to be messenger and junior clerk in a merchant's office off Tower Hill, London, at a salary of 3s Cd weekly. Two years later he went into a lawyer's office as junior clerk, from whence ho was dismissed for declining to say tbe chief clerk was cvgrthmhuk& out when he'was not, and was subsequently employed by a blacksmith, an ironmonger, and brass finisher, At 15 he got into a London dock bottling store, where he picked up gauging, and was then appointed a cadet in a gauger's office, where he remained for six years. In 1862 he went to Melj, bourne, and in July, 1863, he was ( receiving iIOO a year, A short time after he went to Duoedin, where ho was appointed ganger at £BOO a year, and remained at that salary in the Government service until 1878, when it was increased by £2O. In 1887 ho was, transferred to Auckland, and in 1888 he was taken to Wellington and the £2O increase struck off, In March, 1881, lie was BUflpsnded by the Hon George Fisher, and reinstated in June by Major Atkinson, and sent on a tour of inspection round the breweries of the Colony ever since, In addition to checking the beer of 100 breweries, Mr Jackman is gauging officer for the - 'v. whole ol the Colony, and has the supervision of the gauging of all bulk
wines mid spirits in bond in tlie Colony. Besides bis salary lie has received £SOO of tbe fines liu has Eiiccosded in getting imposed on the breweries of ilio Colony,
