A TRAIN SENSATION.
A Collision Narrowly Avortod, i • __ Inveroaegill, January 4. • ■ Onßaturday neany 7000 persons went by rail from Invercargill to the Bluff, where thu regatta was being held, but bad woather spoilt it, Trains were tunning to and fro all day, Through some oversight in the preparation of the timetable thepassen« gers on the 10,60 miming train from Invercorgill got a serious fright, and those on the next train, which left town a quarter of an hour later, were delayed nearly an hour at Wondend, Nearly a thousand passengers were in the first, and nearing Greenhills thosoon tho front trucks were astonished to see another long train empty and returning to town ap« preaching them from the Bluff. Tha whistle of tho : Invercargill engine'' was repeatedly sounded, steam was shut off, and brakes were screwed down promptly, The other train continued to advance, and tho passengers in the front trucks, fearing a collision, jumped out, while others in tha crowded carriages endeavoured to get throngb the windows. The only accident was to an infant, whose mother leaped from tho trucks. It was but slightly injured. Offing to the tmin'slcngth, the passengers in Homo of the compartments were not aware of the danger, and thought the engines had pulled up to avoid cattle. The Bluff train eventually pulled up some distance from the down train. The officers of the department are naturally reticent ns to the causa pending an enquiry, but it is believed the occurrence is duo to a misunderstanding in respect to tho crossing at which liio trains had to pass,
