Yates, and Hugh Campbell. Favoured with a fine day, the summer meeting of the Masterton-Opaki Jockey Club, held yesterday,' turned out highly successful, the attendance of the public quite reaching the expectations of the executive. At times during the day the wind was high, but thia did not materially affect the racing, and as tho course was is good condition after the recent rains, some rather fist times were made. The fields were not large, but some excellent racing and exciting finishes were witnessed. Throughout the day favourites had quite the best of it, the dividends consequently being small, the only one worth mentioning being £7 13s paid on Mahara over the Opaki Stakes The parting in most of the events was good, and nothing occurred to mar the pleasure of the day's sport. The grand stand and saddling paddock were particularly well patronised, not a few ladies honouring the meeting wtili their piesence. The management of the meeting generally was first-class, great credit being due to Mr E. H. Waddington, the able Secretary. The usual number of spielers were ot course present, but owing to the vigilance of Sergeant Hannaa and his staff, they were utterly unable to carry on their little games. The utmost good order prevailed all day, and despite the fact that the publican's booths, respectively under the direction of Mr B. J. Searl of the Star Hotel, andMrsOttoway, of the Royal, were doing an excellent business, not a single inebriate was on the course. No less than £2870 was put through the totalisator, a most 'convincing proof that the public were bent on speculation.
