Mr Macarthur's time in the Land Board expires on the 39th of this month. He is too good a man to be reappointed. Messrs M. Caselborg & Co'a tender has been aocepted for supplies to the Greytown Hospital for the enßUii.g year.

The Wairarapa North County Council invites tenders for several important metalling contracts. Possibly the greatest attraction for Masteitonianson Boxing Day (Saturday next) will bo the annual picnio in connection with the iVesleyan Sunday School, to be held in the public park. These gatherings are becoming more popular year by year, and deservedly so, as they furnish an opportunity for a day's genuine diversion to both old and young, A better spot for a picnio than the park could not be desired, the sur - roundinga being picturesque and pleasant and the position convenient. All kinds of games and sports will be indulged in, and the committee of management will spare no pains to make the gathering a thoroughly enjoyable one to all. As for the refreshments, the fact that they are being catered by Mr Winchester is a sufficient guarantee of their quality and abundance. The sea serpent is still en evidence. Th Cunard liner Servia, which arrived at Queenstown from New York recently furnished particulars of a mammoth sea serpent eighty feet in length, and a monster Bhark over forty feet long, having been seen by the Flemish Cape fishermen on the banks. The sea serpent resembled a giant squid and ploughed the water before him like a bir ocean steamer. Two enormous horns projected from his head. The-moilster, which was a hideous looking thing, was seen but onoe, as he went through the water with great velocity quite close to a fleet of fishing vessels. How realistic—especially the horns 1

When one has to go through the Bankruptcy Court, the press look for a list of the debtor's liabilities, but it never seems to have struck anyone till lately that a list of his book debts would be almost as interesting. The Deputy Official Assignee of Hokitika, Mr R. W. Wade, sold the book debts in a China* man's estate to one Chow Fong, and the latter hat adopted the new plan of advertising the names of sixty of his fellow Celestials, with tho amounts they owe, calling on them to pay at once. How the average Britisher would stand this we would hardly like to say, but fancy actions of somo sort would be found ooming forward in a very short time.

A meeting of the Greytown Voluntoer Fire Brigade Spores Committee wis held last Saturday evening in the Brigade shed. A considerable amount of work was got through in connection with the holding of their annual sports on the 22nd of January next. The Secretary was instructed to writo requesting the help of local vooahsta nud those outside of the Borough at tho concert, and it is to be sincerely hoped that every one requested so to do will consent to aid this deserving body of Voluntoers. A dance will be held after the conceit and the charge is very small —gentlemen If, ladies fres. A refreshment room will be in charge of a capable man. Given fa /ourable weather both sports and concert promise to be a big success.
