At a meeting of the Directors of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society held in the Club Hotel on Saturday night, final arrangements were made for the annual gathering to be held ou New Year's Day. Mr E. J. Searl, of tho Star Hotel, notifies that he has purchased the inside booth at the Opaki Baces to be held on Monday next and also the booths at the Caledonian Sports. Only the very best of liquors will be dispensed.
Our"chromo" almanac "Kathleen Mavourneen" will be distributed with our issue on Thursday next. Judging by an artistic standatd it is superior to any work of the kind yet published in Now Zealand. From the North Cape to the Bluff it is without a rival.
The aunual Catholic pinic is announced to be held on Boxing Day in those beautiful grounds known as M'Kenzie's bush, off Dixon-street. Races, name;, and all kinds of amusements will be provided for old and young, and a most enjoyable day should be spent. . The following is a hat of members of the Masterton Rifle Volunteers who are entitled to the star and efficiency badges of the Defence Department for long service :—Stars —Colour Sergeant Woods, twelve years' service ; Sergeant C Bentley, twelve years; CoiporalG. Bentley, twelve years; Cirporal MoKenzie, ten years ; ftiergeaut Hofleins, nine yeais ; Corporal Blane, nine years. Efficiency badges—Sergeant Peacock, six years ; Sergeant Murray, eight years ; Corporal Hoar, six years. Mr Mackay, of the Wellington Bureau of Industries, toi;k the names of between twenty and thirty men in Masterton this afternoon who desire work on the bketahuna railway. Most of the uien are married and old residents. They will be sent to work in gangs of three or four.
The summer meeting of the Master-ton-Opaki Jockey Club) to ba held on December 28th, promises to be successful from every point of view. The acceptances, which appear in another column, are in themselves a guarantee of a good day's sport. The privileges wore Bold by Messrs Lowes and lorns on Saturday as follows :—Gates, 6 Goker, £4OJ; cards, G. Coker, L 4 10s; No I Publican's booth, E. J. Seal, L 8 ; No 2 Publioan's booth, Mrs Ottaway, L 5; fruit stall, Kow Kee, 80s. The horse ytrds and refreshment booth were passed in. The following extract from a private letter received by the last mail will prove of interest to tho3e ot our readers who have been watehiug the development of the Mount Zeehan silverfield in Tasraania: —" The Queen have found a second Kaolin lode, and are buying another large plant. The Sylvester have found the richest chlorides ever discovered, assaying from 17,000 to 2},0000z of silver to the ton. as to the future prospects of Zeehan there cannot be a doubt. The English newspapers are singing its r. raises, and English capitalists are now putting money into our ventures and also sending experts to report on the field. Stooks are lower owing to the banks putting on the screw and compelling people to sell their scrip at any price, but the worst is now over, and there will be an improvment all round."
Tho firm of Klackner and Sons, of the Hayniarket, who aro held in high repute iu tho English world of art, have, as an experiment, sent to New Zealand a very beautiful collection of engravings, etchings, and photogravures, and these at the present time are on exhibition in Wellington, where they are to be seen at the Dresden Pianofoite Company's Warehouse on Lambton Quay. It is tho intention of Messrs Klackner to dispose of tho whole of these valuable productions by art union, and as the price of a ticket is only half-a-crown, there is no doubt that the highly meritorious quality of tho pictures will secure a rapid and full subscriber's list in the three weeks which intervene before the drawing. Visitors to Wellington are cordially invited to look through the art gallery above the Dresden Piano warehouse where these works of art are now on view. The drawing will be managed by a responsible committee of city men, and Messrs Klackner and Oo's notification in our advertising columns gives full particulars concerning the application for tickets.
