LIBEL ACTION.
Srlson y. Thornton and, Selnrloks*

Wellington, Monday. The libel action brought by J. Evison, Editor and Manager of the Catholic Times, against Mr Thornton (President), and Mr Heinricks (Secretary) ot the Typographical Association, began this morning. The libol complained of was contailad in a letter to Archbishop Redwood, proprietor of the paper, acouaing Mr Evison of making a profit for bis own use by sweating printers and submit* ting to the .degradation, of being [referred to as a man been a freetbought lecturer and writer. In his evidenoe the plaiutiff said he had a fixed salary, and got nothing else, but the printer was paid a 6xed sum lor getting the paper up. ; He admitted he had been a freetbought '• ' lecturer, and edited aM conducted the nationalist, a freethought paper . published in Auckland six years ago/ 1 but he never was an atheist. The plaintiff also detailed the efforts made to &et him to make the Catholic limes '. into a union paper and his rafusal, Mr Jellicoe cross-examined the plain* >1 tiff as to his connection with the i Rationalist, and read a number of extracts from the,file .of this paper, ' some of which were directed against the Roman Catholic Bishop. of Auck* land in reply to a pastoral letter of his, aimed against freethinkers.
