LOWER VALLEY.

Concert at Morrison's stfsn.

(From Our Own Correspondent). This event, which hay been looked forward to with interest by the young public of the district for some time past, took place in the Church on the 17th inst., and was a greatftsuccess. The attendance was very large, which was very gratifying to the promoters. This is perhaps hardly surprising, owing to the unusual amount of first class stars who appeared on tho programme, all of whom kindly consented to give their services when asked without the slightest hesitation. In fact, the remark would apply generally, that our volunteer singers, seem to go hand in hand with their philantrophic and unselfish motives in promoting by their aid the various movements for tho well beirg of their fellow settlers, whether it is to help a person in distress or for the object of improving a church or any other public institution. One noticeable feature at the entertainment was the number of youthful singers who for the first time made their appearance n public. It is well it is so, to give a respite to those whose sorvices are so constantly in request. Australia has produced a Melba, why should not young New Zealand follow in the wake of its sister colony ? It must have been very gratifying to Mrs Butcher after her painstaking teaching to i witness the enthusiastic reception of her pupils, Misses SLeen andCundy. To Mr Wardlaw, the teaqher of the. tonic sol fa class, there was also an agreeable surprise, as four of his pupils, although they had only two months teaching, acquitted themselves most creditably in Thejg names were Misses' Lydia Wakstin and Leach, und Master Claud lin and Leach. The programme, was a lengthy one, was (}ajjl&^^ m through without a hitch. JHMfI
