Mr H. Francis Harrison, of the Great Eastern Silver Mining Company, lectures an the Tasmaman silver fields in the Temperance Ball on Tuesday evening. The annual general meeting of members of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society will be held in the Olub Hotel on Saturday, 7th November. The following comparative rainfall was registered at Otahuao for the past month :—October, 1891,-1.94 inches on 6 days ; October 1890—3.80 inches on 16 days; October 1889—2.15 inches on 10 days.

Not a single bankruptcy has been recorded in this district for the past month, which is a bignificatit indication of the return of commercial prosperity. A blazing ohimney in a house in the West Ward caused two alarms to be sounded on the Queen street firebell this morning.
The application of Mr Beard to have the fine imposed on the Rev J. O. Andrew for failing to destroy rabbits on his property increased from LI to LlO Is, to enable him to appeal, has been refused by Colonel Roberts, R. M. An important announcement from M. Caselberg & Uo, of the Co-operative stores, with reference to their stores and ranpes, appears in our issue ot today. We are requested to state that owing to its non-arrival, a range which reoently took first prize at Napier as " the best range for country districts, " was not exhibited ab the Masterton show, on Thursday. This range will, however, bo open for inspection »t the Cooperative storeß in a few days. " - A five-roomed furnished house situated in the Thorndon end of Wellington, is to be let at a moderate rent, the terms of which may be ascertained on enquiry at the office of this paper. The house, as will be noticed by the advertisement elsewhere, hus a very tine view, is well furnished, and should be a charming residence for anyone wishing to spend the summer months in Wellington.
The following instructions hare been forwarded to the police throughout tho colony regarding the compulsory clauses of the Education Act: "The police will cautiously ascertain if on their beats, pacrols, or sections there are any children over seyen and under thirteen years of age not attending school, in contravention ot the law ; and If so, they will make a'.noteot the tacts, taking; the names ol the parents or guardians, at the same time (where necessary) explaining to them the law relative to school attendance. In places where the law is being so contravened, reports thereof are to be made so that the School Committee or Clerk thereto may issue notices as provided by the Act, third schedule, if after the service of these nocicos the contravention still continue, reports are again to bo made, so that the School Committee or Clerk may institute proceedings. The police will serve both notices and summonses, attend Court to prove cases, and render such assistance as they can to the Education Committee in enforcing, the compulsory clauses of the Act."
