BUSINESS ENTERPRISE.
Messrs Scoullar aal Chisholm's Warefcouso. The large and handsome four-storey warehouse which is so familiar tothe sye of anyone who at all knows Lambton Quay, Wellington, gives, ifterall, Duly a moderate indication of what may be found within, and it is only when a visitor is shown completely through the huge building, as was our reporter last week, that he recognises how extensive has become the furnishing and house outfitting business of Messrs Scoullar and Chisholm, a firm which not only occupies an ex« ceptional position in Wellington, hut has an equally good connection and splendid premises in Dunedin. The ground floor, with its fine plate glass windows frontingLambton Quay is chiefly devoted to the display of ut superb exhibition of drawing room furniture, and while there is always some thing well worth admiring as illustrating the perfection of modern mcchani cal art, there are off and on to hi seen in this magnificent show-roorc (for in point of floor space and in uu interrupted area of view the apart tnent is unequalled in the city) som< exquisite effects in tasteful art fur nishings. Recently, for example, then was a bedroom suite in honeysuckh and riniu, consisting of wardrobe dressing cabinet with full lengtl cheval~mirr«r, and washstand, whicl was of exceedingly beautiful design and which, for finished workmanshi] and handsome appearance, would hav been a credit to any firm in the world Again, at the present time, a sette now on view is of exquisite conceptioi as regards choice of material and coloui which are both delicate and lich, am the completed article is a triumph c upholstering skill. In this departmen there ate many other articles, things c note, but we must pass on, glancin as we do at the wonderful stock c carpets nnd floor-cloths ot every know design almost, and which afford un limited choice to a purchaser whateve his limit in price may be. In musical instruments, Messr Scoullar and Chisholm have a specie department, and o«it of the over ou hundred pianos which they have ii stock and to arrive, a very fin one may be chosen. They hav a most extensive range fiom which purchaser can select, and althougl they keep instruments at all figures they undertake to give, in relation t the price paid, the very best value i the city. They are, indeed, prepare to guarantee even the cheapest pian in the show-room which, in com parison with its cost, will be found thoroughly honest article. A specia feature of Messrs Scoullar an Ohisholm's management is the enter prising step they are taking in offerinj to absolutely make a present of seventy-five guinea pis no to thei customers of the ensuing ten months 411 who purchase a piano at thei establishment during the year whic 1 ends on the 22nd August next have ticket given to them which constitute their chance of winning, under th art union system of ballot, this mos valuable The firm intends t give solid value, and the fortunat winner is by no means obliged to ac cept a second piano. If the one 1) has already purchased is a seventy five guinea instrument theu the wholf of his payment is returned to him, I he has, on the contrary, origiuall; bought a piano for a less sum, he cai either exchange it for the more costi; instrument, or be paid the differenc in hard cash, whichever he prefers Some particulars of this interesting competition are to be found in oui advertising columns, and they wil well repay perusal. To go on with our visit of inspec tion of this huge furnishing establish nient, we now reach the first floor where thdre is a most comprehensive range of bedrooru furniture and q dining room suites ; also some excepq 1 ingly hapdsome pier glasses and chef fqniers, some of ihe latfer being 0 unusually effective style, possessing a they do fjne plate glass blacks, '.put array pf bedheads in the rear pf tlii large room is bewildering, every con ceivable design and quality seeming to be in stock, while several aompleti beds have been erected so as to mak< choice an easy matter. Going a storey higher, the upholstering and bedding departmen is reached, and also a storeroom for mattrass.es, chairs, anc general furnishings. Descending tc the ground floor by a lift capable ol slevating two tons at a time, we follow our guide to extensive, semi-detached workshops at the rear where tin 3abinetmnkers, mattrass staffers ant other employes are at work, and • 8 busy scene is presented. Altqgethei the firm employs forty hands, and ii s thus, by Virtus of its large manufacturing power and its extensive out out, able to afford the customer the oeat collection of furnishings in Weiington to fropi, and to supplj nil at prices which are most moder ite, and which, wore the business of imaller proportions, it would be im possible to adhere to. Messrs Scoullai ind Chisholm have a reputation for juality too, and the mere fact of anyhing having been purchased at their warehouse, is at once a guarantee oi loncat and good workmanship, and >f substantial value. Anyone from .he Wairarapa who is purchasirg iousehold effects, or who is desirous
of acquiring a new piano should cer tainly look through Scoullar and Chisholin's stock, for such an inspection means that they will not go further, because no similar firm is in a posuion to treat them better or more liberally.
