BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last (Tuesday) evening. Present— His Worship fhe Mayor and Crs Heron, Hessey, Mutrie, t. Chamberlain, Feist, E. Chamberlain, Perry and Dixon, CoKSESFONpENGE. From Messrs M. Caselberg and (Jq, asking if the 3ontract for the supply of Portland cement at 23s Qi for any specified time, and offering to supply similar cen entat 215.--Received. From the Public Works Department, requesting that a street lamp bo erected at the Courthouse.—The Clerk intimated that this matter was being attended to. From the Wellington Gas Company, offering to dispose of a gas holder for the sum of £IOO. From the Masterton Agricultural and Pastoral Association, requesting permission to run a traction engine through the streets on show day, and to erect a ticket box in front of the show grounds. The desired permission wag granted'. CoMJfI'fTJSES. The report of" the ineeting of the Wofks and Finance Gommjlfcee was read and adopted, Tho Chairman of tho Works Committee explained that Mr Uatjjaway's repoiton tho outstanding rates was satisfactory. PoUNDKKEPEJI's RErOJiT. The Poundkeeper reported tho receipt of £1 8s Cd tor the month. Wainoawa Water Supply. Cr Hessey thought the plan of the proposed V V aiii"a\va water supply had been submitted to the Council to see if it could assist in procuring such a supply. If tho Council did not take action the Bottlers would take the preliminary steps for survey, etc. The Mayor suid the Council could
hardly compromise themselves before they knew the cost of the survey, etc. The Council would certainly not go in for the scheme without consultiug the ratepayers. Cr Hessey B'ipgested the appointing ofa committee to discuss the matter with a committee of the settlers, and report to the Council.
The Mayor thought this would be desirable. Cr Chamberlain could see no connection between tho two supplies. The settlers wanted open drains and this would net suit the Borough. On the motion of Cr Heron, a Committee consisting of Crs T. and E. Chamberlain, Hessey, Gapper and the mover was appointed to discuss the question of a water supply with a Committee of the settlers, and report to next meeting. GAS AND ADVERTISING. The Council then went into Committee to discuss the question o procuring a new holder for the gas works, and the tenders for the Borough iidvertising. it was resolved that the Manager of the gasworks be sent to Wellington to examine the holder offered by the Wellington Gas Committee. The following offers were received for the Borough advertising for the ensuing twelve months :—J. Payton & Co, Is 6d and 9d per inch; J. J. Smith, Is 6d and 9d. It was resolved that the consideration of these offers be held over for a fortnight. Cr Heron gave nocice to move that the resolution passed at last meeting that the advertising be done in one paper only ba r< scinded. The Council then adjourned.
