Wood at Carterton on Saturday next. The privileges in connection with the TaratnhNCarterton Racing Club meeting will be sold on the same date.
The Temperance Hotel in Hall Streot, Maatertou, which has till quite recently been conducted by Mr John Cullinane, lias been taken over by Mr David Dixon, who solicits, through our columns, a continuance of the patronage extended to his predecessor. The Temperance Hotel has the advantage of being centrally situated, and is nearer tho railway station than any other house of accommodation in the town, whilst for general comfort it cannot be beaten. In the hands of Mr Dixon it is sure to become a popular house.

Tho poll taken at Oro>town yesterday to sanction tho raising of a loan of £350 to build a new institute in a morn conttal position than tho old ono, whioh is situate at tho extreme north ond of the Borough, resulted as follows : Total t'umbcr of votes, 98 for, 15 atrainat. Only 77 ratepayars rr.oorded their votos out of a total of who voted had a total of 11!3 "votes out of 253. Tho result wan against the loan, although 98 votes were rocordod in faTor and oi-ly 15 ngninst. Owing to tho apathy of tho ratepayers in not taking tho troublo to record thoir votos, nnd tho present unsatisfactory Aot, whioh requires a nnjnrity of nctual ratepayer!, not of those who voted, a muclwieedod improvotnont id shelved and progress retarded.
