It was decided to communicate wiUi other centres and endeavour to have associations started there. The annual meeting of the Prison Gate Missjon was held to-day, Mr Justice Denniston presiding. A train on the Kaitangata Coal Company's line, consisting of a» engine, composite carriage, and 80 tracks, was run on to a sliding by mistake, and cime into collision with some loaded coal trucks. No one w" injured, but the engine was so badly damaged that one had to be secured from the Railway Commissioners to take its place. The Son W. Rolleaton. Chbistchdrch, October 13. It hes been decided by sympathisers with the Opposition to give a banoget to the Hon W. Rolleston on Wedflfesday, November 11. The Ohxiatchurch Diocesan Synod. Christchurch, October 13. The annual session of the Diocesan Synod opened to-day. Bishop Julius in his address expressrd regret at the illness of the Bishop of Nelson, suggesting that a message of sympathy should be sent. He stated that the total parochial debts had been reduced by £3OOO. He congratulated the diocese of DuDedin on the foundation of the Selwyn College. Referring to education, he said he entirely approved of the elementary system of ibis Colony, in so far as it was free and compulsory, and if it were only undenominational instead of secular be could support it with alibis heart. He would be ready to join with other denominations in obtaining such a system as that followed by the London School Board. He concluded by expressing his opinion that the time was drawing near when the union of tbe various Christian churches would be accomplished.
