ENGLISHBy Telegraph.—Press Association. London, October 10. Madame Melba has made her son a ward in Chancery, and has settled upon bim a large sum of money. The Rev. Benjamin Jowett, late Vice-Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, is seriously ill, and his condition causes his friends a great deal of anxiety. Professor Jowett is 74 years of age. Professor Jebb has been elected, unopposed, to fill the vacancy in the representation of Cambridge University in the House of Commons caused by the death of Mr Cecil Raiken. The Earl of Derby unveiled a statue of John Bright at Manchester yesterday.

Westminster Abbey was crowded with notables at [he funeral of the late Right Hon. W. H. Smith. The Agents-General for the colonies were all present. It is expected Mrs Smith will be made a peeress in her own right. Her Majesty the Queen sent a wreath to be placed on the late W. H. Smith's c»ffin.
