The Queen has consented to lecd to the Liunceston Exhibition the portrait of herself shown at Jamaica. Mr Wnterhouse, R.A., the artist who painted it, has given his sanction. In liis speech at Cambridge, Mr Morley said the nex>. general election would be a straight fight between Liberal and Tories. He condemned the persistent occupation of Egypt by the British ; Home Rule should be the first duty of the country.
The London and Westminster bank has been robbed of a parcel of shortdated bills to the value of £150,000, It is, however, believed that precautions taken will prevent loss.
Mr Acland Hood is the Unionist candidate fr the Wellington seat, in Somerset.
' The Tmperial Government has decided to recognise the Chilian Junta. Mr Charles Preswitch Scott, Gladstone Liberal,editor of the Manchester Guardian, will again contest the North East Division of Manchester against Sir James Fergusson at the next general election. At the last election the figures were—Fergusson, 8680 ; Scot, 3358. It is reported that H.M. Stanley, during a recent visit to the King of the Belgians, resigned the Governorship of the Congo. In his last letter General Balma* ceda scorned as vulgar the idea to escape, deeming it unworthy of a man who once ruled the destinies of Chili. He mentions that he intended to surrender to the Junta, and honeji Ggai justico but was wwild to;him. The rebellion ii/ Mexico was merely a raid of horse-stealers, and cavalry have gone in pursuit. Owing to the decline in maize, Deacon White, one of the largest opwHtors on the New York Exchange, has filed, with liabilities amounting to sterling. Paris, September 23. The l'Wich press discredit the report that Irance and Russia have re. newed the demand for the British evacuation cf Egypt. NeuYork, September 28. The New or k Central Railway Company has dismissed its alien employes, cheifly Orcadians. The report tha- General Bogran, late President of Honduras, has been murdered, is denied. The China correspondent of the jtfew York Herald te'egraphs that disorders at Ichang are growing, and that Wuchang is ready to revolt, and Hankow and Chumking aio likely to follow, while the mob at Shanghai threaten to do so. Three of the warships hare been ordered to Wuchang, and tin combined fleets are concentrating at Shanghai. The French Minister has gone to Pekin.
