Alexandre Jacques has completed his self'imposed fast' of 50 days. Towards the end of the term he suffered somewhat severely from gout, hue to demonstrate that Hs strength was not materially reduced he carried Mr Kennedy, the mesmerist, twice across the room. During his fast Jacques lost 28£lb.
September 20. Mr Hugh Watt, in a letter to the Times, supports Lord K intore's policy for the development of the Northern Australian territory by means of Chinese. TheArchibishop of Canterbury will unveil the memorial to the late Bishop Parry in Canterbury Cathedral. FOREIGN. Berne, September 20. By au explosion in Forchie'e Colliery, at Oharleroi, in Belgium, twenty-seven miners were killed, and many injured. Valparaiso, September 20. A hurricane at Iquique greatly damaged the shipping. Madrid, September 19.
Riots have taken place ir the districts which suffered from floods. The Queen has opened the palace for the reception of the. sufferers at Aranjuez and Toledo.
Sept 20, Freeh floods have been caused by the overflow of the Rivers Armaguila, Tagus, Quadalquiver and Ebro.
Hundreds of thousands of residents have been rendered homeless, and the sufferers are reported to be starving. A state of anarchy is feared, and owing to the suspension of railway traffic both money and provisions which are available in Madrid are prevented from reaching those in need.
Bhocking loss of life has occurred in Übeda district, a tertile plain lying between the Quadalquiver and Guadnlima, through the floods.
The universality of the inundations is amazing, and the damage is estimated 91 20,000,000 pesetas. In Consuegra 58 streets have been washed away. British residents in Spain have subscribed 300,000 francs to the national relief fund, which now amounts to LIOO,OOO.

The House of Commons has thoroughly thrashed out the motion of Mr Hugh Cameron, member for Inverness, Nova Scotia, impeaching Mr Edward Cochrane, member for Northumberland, for alleged selling of Government positions in his district, with the result that Mr Cochrane was exonerated from participation in tbe alleged slander.
