ARBOR DAY BALL.
The first annual ball, in aid of the funds of tbe Grevtown Arbor Day, was held in tbe Palace Hall last evening, and cannot but be pronounced from every point of view as a signal success, and an inauguration of which the promoters may feel justly proud. Notwithstanding tbe very unfavourable weather, the hall was filled with hilly seventy-five couples, ind visitors from all parts of the Valley enjoyed admirably the efforts of their Arbor Day friends. All arrangements were conducted in a perfect manner by a good committee, with Messrs i\ Haycock nnd H. Fildes as joint secretaries, and the latter are certainly to be complimented upon the straightforward marner in which they performed their arduous duties. Excellant music was provided by M. R. Yarntam's string band, the name of that gentleman alone teiug sufficient guarantee that this department left nothing to be desired. The decorations carried put by a committee of ladies and gentlemen were splendid, admir abletaste being shown in tlie display of bunting and evergreens about the pictnresque Palace Hall, making a delightful scene seldom witnessed in t'ie Wairarapa. The limelight was thrown upon thefeßtive throng several times during the evening, by Mr J. Barnard, and as the gay concourse whirled around the hall, A brilliant life picture was presented. A great many of the dancers wore fancy dresses, lending additional enchantment to tbe yiew, but where so many were attired in pretty costumes it would be imfor us to give a faithful account, so we refrain. The supper, as is usual with all like affap in Greytown, was all that could possibly be desired, and reflected the utmost credit upon ifcc gpod ladies, who, with their jypll-knQwn hospitality, have earned a repiita'ion for the luxuries they provide. Messrs Day and Maguire made very efficient M.C.'s, and sped through a pleasantprogramme
of some twenty-nine dances by the respectable hour of three o'clock. The gallery was crowded with onlookers throughout the evening, who appeared to thoroughly enjoy the terpsichorian efforts of their more favored friends. The floor was in excellent order, and taking one consideration with another, the ball was one of the most enjoy* able and sociable affairs it has been our pleasure to witness for some considerable time.
