The British fleet has left Mitylene, and it is concluded that only ordinary manoeuvres were being carried out. September 16. The Standard in an article on the Eastern question, declares that if Russia extorts any unfair concessions from the Porte, Englaud will simply render them nugatory.
Financiers utilised the British manoeuvres at Mitylene to scare the Bourses, and the Continental press consider that the acceptance of the hoax is evidence of the tension existing among the European nations. Rome, September 15. Ifc is reported that the Italian reserves are to be armed. The Italian Government has ordered twelve torpedo boats. September 16.
The organs of the Italian Government unanimously support the pro posed increase of taxation by £200,000 for war purposes. Constantinople, September 16.
Replying to the Porte, Sir W. A. White, British Ambassador, explained, in connection with the alleged occupation "of Sigri, that only a few sailors had been landed from the British squadron for the purpose of engaging in field gun practice. Berlin, September 16.
The German Press says that supposing the rumoured occupation of Mitylene had been true, Germany would not hare objected. The Kaiser addressing the army at Erfurt, referred to the humiliation the "Corsican parvenu" had inflicted on Prussia.
Paris, September 16,
In French and Turkish diplomatic circles the manoeuvres of the British fleet at Mitylene are regarded as a warning to the Sultan of England's probable action in the future. St Petersburg, Sept. 16.
Mi de Giers, Russian Minister for Foreign Affairs, will shortly pay a visit to Paris.
