WAIRARAPA P. AND A. SOCIETY.

The Masterton Deputation. A meeting of the Committee of the Wairarapa Pastoral and Agricultural Society was held at Carterton on Saturday, about twenty persons being present. The chair was occupied by Mr W. C. Buchanan, M.H.R. A deputation was also present from the Masterton Society, which was introduced by the Chairman. Mr James McGregor, one of the Masterton delegates, said he thought it desirable in the interests of breeders and sellers that one ram and ewe fair only should be held in the Wairarapa. If the fairs were held alternately at each end of the district he thought it would suit all parties concerned. The Chairman asked whether, if the alternate fairs was not accepted, the deputation had any other suggestion to make.

Mr McGregor replied that they had no other proposal to make than that the shows should be held alternately. fhe Chairman said he would prefer a central site being fixed for the fairs to holding them alternately. Mr W. Booth said they were in the same position now as fourteen years ago. He referred to the feeling which had arisen at the two ends of :!)(• district and thought the present or posal undesirable. It would be beneficial to the whole district if the Masterton Society would join in having one show at a central site. They wanted a permanent and convenient pla:e. The question of alternate shows or amalgamation could not be solved as easy now as it could some years ago. Whilst the deputation from Masterton wished to discuss the question of ram fairs, he thought it would bs wise if an amalgamation could be completed which would result in one large show being held in a central spot. Mr H. R. Bunny said he was desirous of seeing only one show in the district, and said it would yet come. He was quite willing that the ram fair should be held at some central site, but did not favour holding alternate shows. ! The Chairman said the trouble 'would arise in finding a spot upon which both ends of the valley would agree. Mr Coleman Phillips thought there would be more exhibits it the two fairs were combined.

Mr Matthews favoured the holding of alternate fairs. Mr J. Martin suggested the holding of the ram fairs in Masterton and the shows in Carterton.

The Chairman said they could not expect the deputation to express an opinion on such a question. Mr McGregor: We are only em-, powered to deil with the question of ram fairs,

Mr W. Beetham, as a pastoralist, said he would prefer that there should be one ram fair only, This might lead up to the amalgamation of shows. Mr A. \V. Care said he had hoped they would have been able to settle the question of ram fairs. The one fair would be better for both breeders and buyers. Mr Jas. Stucbey was in favour of the alternate fairs. If one show could be arranged in the Wairarapa he would also do his best to push it forward. Mr Booth said it would be best to combine the two societies and hold the shows at one central place. As to the ram fairs the Society would be called together, and a Committee probably appointed to confer on the matter.

flie Chairman was deoidedly against holding peripatetic shows. Alternate exhibitions were in his opinion impracticable. He was convinced that with rrutual concessions and forbearance one show could be brought about. Mr Beetham said that whilst they might hold but one show they should not get away from a town. Mr MoGregor doubted whether the movement for one show would be supported. Mr Perry would like to see the question of the amalgamation discussed. In Masterton the opinion was divided.

Mr Phillips thought the suggestion of Mr Martin that ram fairs be held in Masterton and the shows in Carterton a good one. After further discussion it was decided to hold a special meeting of the Society in a fortnight to go fully into the question of amalgamating the ram and ewe fairs and shows. j
