S& The Hon Mr Rolleston aßked the Premier what coarse he proposed to take with regard to the conduct of public business, aDdhe thought the House would also desire to have information on that subject. The Premier said it was the intention of the Government to bring " the business of the session to a close as soon as possible—probably at the end of next week, if the discussion on the Estimates proceeded without any waste of time. If the House wished any particular day to be set aside for the discussion of the Public Works Statement the Government would be very happy to accede to that wish. The ocean mail services would be brought down on either Monday or Tuesday next. "Mr W. Kelly presented the report of the Native" Land Bill Committee, recommending the postponement of the BUI till next session. Mr Recs pointed out the necessity for some immediate legislation in regard to - settling the validity of titles of lands, as at present the state of the law prevented any arrangement being come to.—After a long discussion the report of the committee was ordered to be laid on the table. WATER SUPPLY. BILL. The second reading of this Bill was moved by the Minister for Lands. It is designated to enable county councils, and, in certain cases, roed
boards, to construct and maintain • works for water supply, and to make wayjsion for the cost thereof. Bill was read a second time without discussion. STAMP ACTS AMENDMENT BILL. The Premier moved the second reading of this BUI, which provides for a tax of 1$ per cent on the totalisator takings at all race meetings, all steamship passenger tickets are liable to duty when exceeding £2, and deeds of gift will be charged duty the same as settlements. It is intended tcTcUme into operation in October. The second reading was agreed to . on the voices. PALMKKSTON NOBTH HOSPITAL LAND BALES VALIDATION BILL. A motion by-the Premier for the second reading of this Bill was agreed (o on the voices. PROPERTY TAX BILL. The Premier moved the second reading of this Bill, which was, he said, exactly the same as last year. - The motion was agreed to. LAND FOB BFTTLEMFNT BILL. » The second reading of this Bill was a deal of discussion.
