London, September 8,
An entire herd of pedigree shorthorn cattle, the property of Mr Perkin Moore, of Cumberland, have been destroyed, owing to their suffering from pleuro pneumonia.
It is intended to raise an Indian regiment to garrison Hongkong. The Rev 0. H. Spurgeon has passed the acute stage of his disease. The Lizzie Horton, of Sydney, was wrecked in a hurricane on the Gullinare shoals, and sank, bat the craw were saved.
The barque Geestemunde, from Newcastle to Penang, is po3ted as missing.
London, September 3.
A conference of the Chambers of Commerce is being held in Dublin. A resolution was passed favouring the expediency of arranging a closer commercial union between England and her colonies. It is believed a Congress of all the Chambers of Commerce in the British Empire would conduce largely to this end. Sir Arthur Rollit advocated a differential tariff in favor of the colonies.
In speaking on the question of a commercial union between England and her colonies at the Dublin Conference, Sir A. Rollit admitted it would involve some sacrifice of Free trade, but he argued that Federation upon a fiscal basis would strengthen the Empire. The time bad arrived when they must protect their own interests. He denied the motion was raorely veiled Protection. The fiscal union of the Empire was the problem of the day. Cheapness was no longer the chief object.

The Mexican ranch proprietors are paying the expenses in connection with the experiments in Texas and elsewhere for producing rain.
New York, Semptember 2,
Robbers stopped a train at Ogdens burg, and stole £7OO. The Sheriff is pursuing the offenders with bloodhounds.
Washington, September 2
It is reported a district Governor in Nicaragua and six of his men were killed in frustrating an attempt to release some prisoners. Sofia, Septembers.
By mutual agreement, Servia and Bulgaria have withdrawn the troops from their.respective frontiers.
It is rumoured that K. Stambouloff, Premier of Bulgaria, has been murdered, and that the fact is being ' kept quiet by the Government of that country.
Berlin, September 3. The Emperor has left for Austria to attend the military manoeuvres. He was accorded an enthusiastic welcome along the route. Orders have been given to largely increase the German artillery. The German Government is secretly purchasing large quantities of coal. The anniversary of the surrender of Napoleon at Sedan was observed throughout Germany with unusual fervour.
The press declare the time iB drawing near when the unity of the Fatherland will have to be defended again, and a second Sedan is possible. St Petersburg, Sept. 2nd.
It is stated that the Russian Government intend to raise a loan in Paris,
A report is current that Russia proposes to exchange Bessarabia, a province of Southern Russia, situated between the Pruth and the Dniester, for Dobrudscha, an extensive district of Roumania, on the Black Sea.
September 8. Seven thousand Russian Jews have left for England, United States, and Australia.
Eussia is purchasing Suez Canal bonds, with a view of strengthening French influence, andisalso immensely increasing the issue of paper roublesJewish emigrants to Palestine are returning to Odessa in a destitute condition.
The Russian military authorities are sending troops belonging to the famine stricken district back to their homes, in order to assist in lightening the burden of their destitute relatives.
The Government will probably limi the rate of interest.
Ottawa, September 2. During a hurricane the steamer Dunmurray capsized off the coast of Nova Scotia and eight persons were drowned.
