TOWN LANDS TRUSTEES.

The monthly meeting of the Maaterton Town Lands Trustees was held lastevening, there beingpresent Messrs W. Lowes (Chairman), Kenall. B. P. Perry, Gapper, and Eton. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £BB 7s 4d. An apology for absence was read from Mr John Graham. Mr W. Sellar made application for the usual grant in aid of the Park Trust Fund.—The application was granted. The action of the Secretary in paying certain insurance fees was confirmed. SCHOOL GRANTS. The Eev. J. McKenna made application for the following grant for St. Patrick's school: Gleaning, £7 ; scavenging, £5 ; desks, etc, £B. On the motion of Gr Gapper it was decided that the sum of £l2 be granted this school, the same as last year. SCHOOL OF DESIGN. The Rev. W. E. Paige wrote, stating that owing to the small number of pupils attending the School of Design it was impossible to obtain a certified teacher for the salary offered, and asking if the Trustees wished to purchase the school apparatus. After some discussion, in which regret was expressed at the collapse of the School of Design, it was resolved that the members of the Trust inspect the school apparatus, and then decide on what action should be taken. MASTERTON SCHOOL.

An application was made by the Masterton School Committee for a grant of £27 18s for cleaning and removing nightsoil. A detailed statement of the works required was submitted. The Chairman said it was difficult to discover what the School Committee really wanted. Personally he was puzzled. The Committee had given them a gentle hint that they wanted £6O, and now they came upon them with a further request for £27 18s.

Mr. Gapper said he believed the original application had been withdrawn.

The Chairman: Then we will put aside all previous applications and consider the one of September 3rd. It is for the Trust to decide whether it will grant the amount applied for or make an annual grant. Mr. Eton thought they should make a determined stand and allow the Committee so much a year. The Committee had discovered in the nightsoil and cleaning application a new way of getting money. Mr. Gapper asked if it was not possible to make their grants en a pro rata basis. The Chairman and Mr. Renall did not think this practicable. Mr. Eton: If we make these grants to the Committee, where is the capitation spent ? The Chairman : The capitation is altogether insufficient for the requirements.

Mr Perry considered they should have some statements of the requirements of the schools, and make their grants annually. The Chairman stated that the difficulty with the schools had arisen oyer the Trust requiring a schedule of the monies spent. Mr Eton : There is no doubt in my mind that there are men on the Committee who have very extravagant notions. We should meet them with a firm hand.

The Chairman moved that the Clerk write to the School Committee, requesting an application for the full grant required for the year. Mr Eton seconded.—Carried. GENERAL.

Mr Godfrey Russell applied to the Trust for permission to smb-let a portion of hio building to Mr Elliotts.— It was decided to write to Mr Russell, requesting him to enquire how far his insurance might be affected by the change. The consideration of certain communications from the Mayor (Mr C. A. Pownall) with regard to a Town Hall and the insurance on the library was held over till next meeting. It was resolved to take steps to prevent the sticking of bills on the fence in Hall street.

The meeting then adjourned.
