JUVENILE OPERA CO.
Appearance In Wellington.
[By Telegraph]. (Our Own Correspondent).
Wellintok, Saturday. Williamson's Juvenile Gomie Opera Go opened at the Opera House last ' night in. "La Mascotte" to a most auspicious reception. The attendance of the public was large, and there were repeated and emphatic expressions of approval throughout the performance. The opera was mounted in a surprisingly complete manner, the Scenery and dresses being irreproachable and presenting a series of charming living pictures. The military manoeuvres in the forest glade in the third act were very pleasing, acd were executed with wonderful precision amid many encouraging plaudits from the audience. The children altogether are remarkably well drilled, and their acting and dialogue is as good as anything which has been seen here, some of them, too, have very sweet voices. Miss Lily Everett, the youthful prima dowa, who took the character of "La Mascotte", being a particularly attractive vocalist and singing with astonishing taste and expression. The parts of the " Duke of Rombino," by Master A. Stevens, and " Rocco," by Master H. Quealy, were tlso excellent representations and were rendered with a particularly clever strain of comicality. The dialogue bristled with local and political allusions, many of which were pointed with considerable conceptive wit. The choruses were given with spirit and accuracy, while the harmonies of colour in scene and dress were at times most bright and fascinating. A successful season should certaintly follow.
