A Barque on Fire.
Sensational Occurrence at Noumea, Three Lives Lost. Bvpnev, August IQ. News from Noumea reports the total destruction of the barque Nan? tilus bound from Sydney. She was lying at anchor in Noumea when the cargo was discovered to be on fire. The crews of the German warships Sseone and Thetis endeavowed to arrest the progress of the flame?, and worked for 36 hours continuously, bat w avail. Finally the vesa"*"! was Bc <" tled and run on the beach. Two of the Nautilus' crew and one native were suffocated before they could be rescued. Another seaman was badly burnt. The wreck and cargo sold for 10,000 francs. The vessel is believed to be insured iu the South British for £14,000. The cargo, valued at over £2OOO, principally copra, was uninsured.
