The annual drawine examination taken place at the Masterton School on Wed* nesday, September 2nd. A violent shock of earthquake was experienced in Masterton at ten minutes past nine last night. The residence of Mr. James Sinclair, at Ballance, is used for a post office, school, and place of worship. The Pahiatua Star, which is owned and edited by Mr, Alexander Black, is now published three times a week. Hitherto it has been a bi-weekly. The season being so far advanced, the Masterton School Committee is taking no action in the direction of proclaiming an Arbor Day. A general meeting of members of the Masterton Agricultural and Pastoral Association, to discuss the advisability of holding only one Bam Fair in the Wairarapa, is to be held in the Club Hotel on Wednesday next. A large number of Masterton residents together with Pearson's Brass Band, proceed to Greytown this evening, to be present at the Masquerade Ball.

The death is announced of Mrs C J. Toxward, wife of the Danish Consul in Wellington, at the age of 48. A further reduction in the railway charges upon lime used by farmers as manure is to be made by the Railway Commissioners. The annual examination of the Masterton School takes place in about five weeks' time. Some excellent photographs of New Zealand cheeses were recently handed round at a meeting of the London Chamber of Commerce, and much interest was excited.

The debtor, however, did not put in an appearance, and the Official Assignee, lawyers, and a host of creditors returned to their homes disappointed. The meeting was adjourned till ten o'clock on Wednesday, at the Mastertyn Courthouse.

We are informed that the request of the Mauriceville settlers that an officer be placed in charge of the local station is baing carefully considered by the Railway Department, and that the decision is likely to be favourable. Mauriceville has long felt the want of a library, and with the intention of raising money to make a start in this direction, the School Committee, in conjunction with the teacher, are organising a series of entertainments, the proceeds of which are to be set aside for the purchase of books. The first will be held on Saturday, the 22nd inst, in the old schoolroom.

Tbe programme, as on the previous evening, was a very interesting one, and every item was loudly applauded. The singing of Mr W. B. Cadzow vas much admired, and the comicalities of Mr Billy Akarman evoked roars ot laughter. The performance of Miss Pearl Akarman, the lady contortionist, was remarkably clever, whilst the acrobatic feats of the Connor Bros were really wonderful. The step dancing, funny skits and farces com pleted a most enjoyable ontertainment. The final performance of the Minstrels will be given this evening.
