The American Minstrels arrived in Maeterton by tho mid day train to day. The election of a Licensing Committee for the Masterton Licensing District takes place on Friday, September 4tb. Nominations close on August 28th. Notice is given by the Commissioner of Crown Lands that twenty four sections in the Mangaramarama Village Homestead Settlement, will be open ior application on September 3rd. Mr J. H. Phillips, of Wellington, advertises that he is a purchaser of all kinds of poultry, trussed or alive, in any quantity for cash. " Creditors' Dolight "is the name given to a new.brand of coffee. It settles promptly.
A first and final dividend of 10s in the £ is now payable at th« office of Mr W. B. Chennells, Ofhoial Assignee, in the estate of David Anderson, of the Taueru. A practice of those taking part in Mr Coleman's concert is to be held in St Matthew's schoolroom this evening. The Minister for Public Works, in reply to Mr Hogg, M.H.K., states that the Acting-Engineer has made reports, and is in favour of retaining the Bimutaka incline on the line between Wellington and the Walrarapa. Mr. Edmund Holt, of Featherston, contractor, was to day adjudged a bank* rupt.
The ordinary train to the Wairarapa od Saturday afternoon will be delayed till 5.30 p.m., on account of the football match between the Red Stars and the Ponekes.
The following telegram has been received by a resident of Master ton from a member of the Alhambra football team: —" Three of our first men unable to get off. Are seeding three seconds." Two bushtalliog contractors are alleged to have cleared out from the Lower Valley within the last fortnight, leaying their men unpaid. There were 14 men recently looking for their boss, who had made a draw the day before, and failed to return to the camp. In the latter case it is not unlikely that criminal proceedings will be instituted- Asa consequence there is a general feeling of insecurity amongst bushfallers who are working for contractors, and the men think that some stops ought to be taken by the Legislature to protect their hard-earned wages.
A man named William Mohr was killed in his claim near Woodstock yesterday morning (says the West Coast Times ot the 4th). It appears that they had an enormous atone in the roof of their tunnel which occasioned them some anxiety. In timbering up Mohr hap* pened to go under the stone, when it
fell without any warning, crushing the unfortunate man to the ground and killing him instantly. Very great ditficultywas experienced in recoyering the body, and ev6ntual'y a tunnel had to be driven under the stone to accomplish that object. Mow is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by purchasing the extraordinary bargains in blankets, flannels, dress goods, and thousands of other lines at Hooper's gigantic sale now on. During the next few days we shall offer still further inducements to the public to secure some of the many bargains at our gigantic sale, by further reducing every description of winser clothing. L. J. Hooper and Co. are determined to reduce before stock-taking (which is new in full swing) their stock of men's ind boy's clothing, shirts, hats, socks, braces, belts, undershirts, and underpants, ties, overcoats, mackintoshes, eto. They expect to clear out; about one half of the present stock before the end of the sale. So look out tor bargains at Hooper's.
