Suppose! Eruption. Auckland, A ugust 15. There was a curious appearance in the sky this morning, from 4 to 5 o'clock, at Hamilton, Waikato, a bright red lieht being seen in the south east. Numerous explosions also took place between 5 and 7 o'clock, twelve in all. It was conjeotured that an eruption had taken place somewheie, but none is reported at Botorua.
Supreme Court Dunedin, August 14. In the Supreme Court, the action of Bush v Mornington Tramway Company was commenced, in which the plaintiff, an expressman, claims £IOOO damages for injuries from a fall, alleged to have been caused by the negligent maintenance of the Company's line. Plaintiff's case only is concluded. Dr Macdonald who attended the plaintiff expressed himself satisfied that the case is a typical one of concussion of the spine. From the cross examination, defendants evidently intend to try to prove that plaintiff is suffering from hysteria.
An AucklanA Whaling Venture. Auckland, August 15. The schooner Christine is being fitted up by Captain McLiver for a whaling enterprise. He is joined in the • venture, by Cook brothers, of Russell, the well known whalers. He carries a crew of 18, and sails for the fishing grounds of the South Pacific, away to the eastward of New Zealand. Hitherto whaling ventures from Auckland have been unsuccessful
Desperate Condition of an Emigrant Ship. Auckland, August 15. The American emigrant ship Pactolus arrived at Kohola, Hawaiian Islands, on the 18th July, 61 days from Hong Kong, with 600 Chinese coolies on board. The officers of the ship reported that their provisions had nearly gone, and they had no more water. Another 24 hours at sea would have produced a mutiny. The vessel left China with provisions for 55 days' passage.
Tie Mariposa. Auckland, August 16. The Mariposa, due yesterday at 2 p.m. from Sydney, had not put in an appearance up to 5.30 this evening The easterly gale which has been blowing for the past two days; with thick weather and rain to-day, will probably be the cause et the delay of arrival. •
