(Per United Press Association). A Terrible Storm. Auckland, Monday. The Mariposa, from Sydney, arrived at 8.30 a.m., after a terribly stormy passage of six days. The vessel was hove to lor 48 hours. During the gale the pilot house and deck movables were lost. A boat was smashed and other slight damage done. Two passengers narrowly escaped being washed overboard, and a dootor had his ribs broken. The captain describes the weather as bad as any he has ever experienced. The Sarah Bernhardt company, who are passengers, are returning to 'Frisco.
Barthquata Shooks. Napier, Monday. A sharp double shock of earthquake was felt at 10.17 p.m. yesterday, and another at 2 a.m. to»day. No damage has been done. Latkr, The earthquake was severely felt at Hastings, where bottler were thrown from shelves, chimneys oracked, etc. A clock that had stopped for a long time was set going, and as the swing of the pendulum was north and south it is supposed that was the direction of the wave.

Wellington, Monday. Alexander Dundras, surveyor, of Palmerston North, came down to give in a Supreme Court case last month, and has not been seen since the 30th. His friends are now anxious abeut him. No trace of the missing man has been found, though the matter has been under investigation for some time. It is feared he must have come to some harm.
Tie Municipal Conference
Wellington, Monday. The Committee appointed by the late Municipal Conference met this morning, Messrs Swan, Fish, Trask, Kirk and Brown, being present. A set of rules were drafted, *_and it was decided to send a copy to all the municipalities in the colony. A resolution was passed asking members of Parliament who are on the Committee to support the Municipal Act Amendment Bill in its passage through the House.
