The application of Mr Pownall for an execution order in the case Spaokman v. Wairarapa JNorth County Council has been refused by His Honor District Judge Robinson. It is, we are informed, not Mr A. 0. Atkinson of Wellington who purchased Mr A. A. White's dentistry connection In Masterton, but Mr J. S. Atkinson. The lattrr is arranging for the early introduction of Mr White's successor, and the now practitioner will arrive in a few days, What might havo been a serious acoident occurred yesterday (Sunday). As Mr Brown, of Carterton, was driving home from Greytown, in company with two ladies and three children, the winkers fell from the horse, which took fright and backed the vehicle into the ditch. Fortunately no ono was the only damage being the breaking Sp the shaft of the trap, and part of th<) harness.
At a Resident Magistrate's Court sitting in the South Island recently, a member of the legal profession Appeared for the plaintiff in a civil oaso to ask for an adjournment. "On what grounds?" asked the magistrate. * 'lf your Worship pleases, you held an inquest on him this morning," was the answer. The ad« journmeat was granted as prayed. The Masquerade Ball to be held in Greytown on Friday next, gives fair promise to be the most successful yet held in tha»; town. Special attoution is boingpaid to the music. Mr. Lundgvißfc, from Carterton, and Mr. Stowell, from Wellington, are welcome additions with their violins. Thero will be more dancing room than has been heretofore. The majority of those attending will be in fancy costume, and arrangements are being made for a grand lime light illumination. The Secietaries are putting forth every endeayour to pro*> vide a good evening's enjoyment for lovers of danoing,
The American Minstrels concludod their season at the Opera House, Wellington, on Saturday, to a crowded attendance. Hearty laughter, frequent applause, and genuine enjoyment seemed to prevail among those present. The Company's programmes are very liberal ones. Mr. B. H. Beattie, the advance manager, was a passenger by this moraine's train to arrange for the Wairarapa seaßon. Among the visitors to tho dress circle at the Opera House on Saturday evening wore the members of the Kennedy-Dobson Dramatic and Comedy Company, who had just arrived in Wellington. The latest novelty in life insurance is an agent offering tobacco to secure a proposal, A canvassing agent not a hundred miles from Masterton, and canvassing for a very old company, I approached a young man not a month ago, and after trying to persuade him that his oompany had a magical way of turning copper Into gold, and ofiering him inducements that no other company would allow their representatives to use, said : "If that is not good enough for yon, I will pay your first premium, sb I have often done before." The sensible young man smiled, shook his head, and walked away saying, " Your story is too good to be true; I have hoaid about you before." "Hold on, says the ex-draper, " If you give me a proposal, 1 will make you a present of two pounds of tobacco."
