DESTRUCTION OF RABBITS.
The Uaa of Si-Sulphide of Cartfca
One of the Overseers of the North Wairarapa Babbit Board has sent the following report to the Inspe :tor on the use of bi-sulphide of carbon for the destruction of rabbits : I was with a gang of men 'or three hoars. The man in charge has been using bi-sulphide down South and gave me particulars, and from what he told me and what I saw myself I make the following suggestions: A thoroughly trustworthy man is required to overlook the work as there have been instances of men throwing the carbon away on account of the obnoxious smell and nsing water. Test the carbon before using, as in some cases the whole consignment is bad and in others partly so. Do not use old salt bags in place of water or other material, as salt kills the streDgli and makes the carbon useless. In places where there are likely to be air holes from earth cracks or other resources, it is advisable to throw a lighted match on the carbon in the burrow, and the smoke emitted from the explosion will show whether the burrow is airtight. One rabbit we dug out, after being in the carbonised burrow for five minutes with a loop hole open, was still alive, but even with the aid of the fresh air did not recover. Owners should be warned from allowing the use of bisulphide to contract rabbitters, as they merely use it in place of ferrets and do not trouble to block the holes, but shoot the rabbits for the skins.
