CORRESPONDENCE.

(To the Editor.) Sir. —Who is this " Johnny Newcome " that sends these long letters to your paper signed " A, Walker?" Does he live in Masterton ? Is he a ratepayer of the Borough, has he any interest in the town, or is he associated with any of its public institu tions ? Surely not, or otherwise he would be known, but whoever heard of "A. Walker" until he thrust himself forward as a Champion of Liquordom ? Whoever he is, he must be possessed of unbounded cheek if he imagines for a moment an unknown individual like himself can influenoe the decision of the ratepayers on the important social question now panding. As for the other champions of drink we know them, they have been on the Bench before, except perhaps Qus Cave ; we know what they have done in the past, and we know what they will do again. We know that they are publican's nominees, we know they have come forward, not in the public interest, but in the interests of the publicans, and we know quite well we must not expect any change for the better if these men are elected. No doubt " Johnny Newcome " thought himself very clever when he got someone to write all that beery blather about his " Moderate Committee," but no one is deceived, we all recognise that there are two parties, and two only. The one party, if elected, will cut down the drink traffic to its lowest possible limits; the other party, if elected, will foster and encourage the d'-iak traffice, no matter how much misery is cauS?d by 80 doing, and the ratepayers of this town have £ C]]? 03e which of these parties they will support. The choice has already been made, at large majority has decided for Prohibition, and on Friday next this majority will elect men who will give effect to its wishes, in spite of "Johnny Newcome."—l am, etc., A Wobsins Man,
