Taratahi-Carterton Road Board.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Board was held on Saturday. Present—Messrs H. R. Bunny (chairman), H. Braithwaite, Morgan. A. Gallon, E. W. Dorset, N. G*a3|, P. Gray, W. B. Allen, and G. W. Dteller. Thnafh-it-i of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Treasurer reported the bank overdraft to be £677 9s lid and also laid on the table a statement of receipts since last meeting. The minutes of the special meeting held on the 11th July for the purpose of defining the area for the levying of a special rate to meet the requirements of a loan for the erection of a bridge over the Ruatnahunga river at Kokatau wer.e read and adopted. A statement of liabilities of each Ward was also laid on the table. A letter was read from J W Marshall, asking that the Board will reconsider the matter in respect to making Messrs Potts and the slabs from Portland Road. Mr Braithwaite reported that he had inspected the road and thought that it would be advisable to allow Messrs Potts and Co. to slab th 9 whole of the road, as they had offered to. Mr Deller reported that Mr Hercock had a good metalled road to his slaughterhouse, and did not sea the necessity of the Board going to any expense on his behalf. Mr Braithwaite moved and Mr Deller seconded that Potts and Co. have permission to slab and sawdust the road, but that the Board will not hold themselves liable for any eipenses in connection therewith. The Auditor-General wrote, advising the Board to ase all diligence to prevent any misappropriation of the funds. Mr W. Stey applied for the lease of a piece of land which is an unused road, adjoining his property. It was resolved that he be informed that the Board has no power to accede to his request. It was resolved that the thirds and fourths be spent in improving the Kaiwhata bridle track. A deputation of settlers from Matarawa waited on the Board in reference to the special rate to be collected over a portion of that road district. Mr S. M. Hart, as spokesman, gave some particulars as to of the matter, and stated that as far as he remembered there was not a dissentient voice against the special rate at the time the money was borrowed, but at tb.6 same time the ratepayers were informed that the special rate would not be collected. Mr Gallon stated that if the ratepayers of that part of the district would undertake co keep that part of the road in repair, he would withdraw his motion in respect to the collecting of the special rate. The deputation did not agree to Mr Gallon's proposal. The Wardens generally were adverse to levying a special rate on a portion of the district without including the whole of the district, as they were all (more or less) benefitted by it. The resolution that the special rate be collected having been put by the Chairman, the motion was lost. Mr Moore waited on the Board in reference to a loan for making the road on the-Coast line. - v Mr Moore thought that about would b9 sufficient. It was resolved that an application be made to the Government for the required loan. The Chairman having read the area over which the special rate would have to be collected, it was deemed satisfactory, and the motion carried. Mr Drisooll waited on the Board and asked that something be done to the road leading to his property. Mr Darroch stated that he had inspected the road and considered that there were far worse roads in the district than that now complained of. It was resolved that the matter be left in the hands of the Wardens for Nos. 2 and 3 Wards. Accounts amounting to £lB4 12s 8d were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
