The Wellington Land Board met yesterday. Our report of the proceedlngi is held over till to-morrow. A labouring man named Barnes, whilst stepping on to a footpath in Wellington, fell »nd broke his leg. Instead of a dining room at Bellamy's some ef the members are said to be anxious to have a billiard room. It is reported that Mr Fysh succeeds Sir E. Braddon as Agent-General for Tasmania. The remaindor of the Australian A uziliary Squadron left Batavia oa Monday last for Adelaide. During the year 1890 no leas than 1,290,540 lbs of sugar, including glucose, was used in the breweries of this colony. We hare received from the Government Printer, Hansard No 10, which is as usual replete with information of an interesting (?) character. Mr Hogg, M.H.R., has asked that rabbit wire netting be imported by the Government, and supplied to settlers at actual cost and on deterred payments.
Dr Newman will move when the Land Bill is in Committee that a new clause be Inserted setting apart a block of 5000 acres to be owned and worked on co-operative principles. The attention of the Government has been drawn to the tact that Mew Zealand mutton is being sold in London as English mutton, and inferior stuff as New Zealand mutton. For ways that are dark, etc I The erection ot a schoolmaster's residence at Belvidere has just been completed by Mr 0. E. Daniall, builder, of Masterton. The Observer hears that the unemployed sent by the Government to Pahiatua have left that locality. One of them was last seen with a bottle that cheers in either hand. Mr Pinkerton, M.H.8., says He has received a letter from a party of twenty men who have a couple of hundred pounds each, and are waiting for the perpetual lease system to prevail In order that they may take up land.
The sneak thief is still at work in Masterton. His latest victim is the Captain of the Salvation Army, from whom a new woollen rug has been stolen.
Between the 25th June, and the 29th of July, 1200 acres 1 rood 37 perches of Crown Lands have been disposed of in the Wellington district at an upset price of £6066 6s 6d.
Great prohibition meetings are announced to be held in the Temperance Hall on Saturday and Sunday evenings, when addresses will be delivered by Messrs T. L. Buick, M.H.8., and T. W. Glover, and the Revs Dukes, Wood and others.
The many friends of Mr A. A. White, dentist, of Masterton, will regret to hear that he is about leaving for Auckland, where he intends to permanently settle. Mr White, during his short stay in this town, has, by his genial disposition and courtesy, made himself deservedly popular. As a member of the Poultry Association his services have been invaluable, whilst by other bodies in which he has figured prominently, his loss will be severely felt. We understand that Mr White has disposed of his practice to Mr Atkinson, of Wellington. Sporting men would find it greatly to their advantage by corresponding with A. J. Jacobs, the professional Taxidermist from London. Birds, fish, animals and reptiles preserved and mounted in the highest style.
