MASTERTON ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Masterton Road Board was held on Saturday. Present— Messrs. W. H. Beetham (Chairman), McLeod, Brown and McKenzie.
An apology for absence was read from Mr. Wardell.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. An extension of time was granted to Mr. Cummins to complete contrsot No 3, Kaka-amu Valley road.
It was resolved that the Board is not prepared to enter into the arrangement proposed by Mr. G. Coe as to leaving the gravel reserve on Dorset's road at present, and that the County Engineer be requested to send the Overseer to report on the reserve.
The Treasurer was authorised to make a payment of £SB 9s 8d to Mr Daniel 1 for extras or the Wangaehu extension contract.
A circular was read from the Con-troller-General, asking that vigilance be exercised to prevent embezzlement. It was resolved to request Mr Riddle to open up Bannister Btreet in Wardell Township.
Messrs P. Cotter and E. E. Chamberlain attended to complain of the charges made upon them and others in connection with raising the £950 Upper Opaki Loan. —It was decided that the survey expenses be charged against sab-division No 3, and the balance be claimed from the guarantors on a pro rata basis. An application from Messrs • R se and Messenger that the bush on the road line adjoining sections 107 and 108 be felled, was refused, as it was considered that the sections were not in the district. It was resolved that Mr Renal 1 be written to and requested to hand the old Wairarapa Road Board minute book over to this Board as a public record. The Clerk was instructed to write to the contractor on the Matahiwi road, stating that the terms of the contract required him to remove all logs from the road. The report of the Engineer was read and adopted.
The Chairman alluded to some rather disparaging remarks made in Dr Hosking's letter to the Star relative to the opinion h<3 had of the other members of the Board. He (Mr Beetham) was quite sure that tbe members of the Board would give him credit for not entertaining such an opinion. The firm of which he was a member would have preferred to hive taken the Otahuao route for a road. The road was not likely to be made for many years, as it would cost £SOOO to open it. As to the absence of any reference to the Te Whiti road, the reason of this was that the road had already been Uken by the Government Surveyor. It was therefore not necessary to make any allusion to it. It was on the origina 1 schedule, as was shown by the Board's minutes. The report of the Finance Committee was adopted and accounts passed for payment. The m eeting then adjourned.
