The City Schools Committee passed a resolution strongly disapproving of the proposal submitted to the Board of Education to reduce the head teachers' salaries to a maximum of £3OO, believing it detrimental to the best interests of education in the district. The Salvation Army have opened a Rescue Home. It is anticipated that a large quantity of furniture, etc, will be contributed by the public for furnishing it. Dunedin, July 22. The City Council to»night passed a reselution to the effect that if the Local Authorities Accounts Bill is passed into law it will unduly harass the Council in its financial operations, without effecting any improvement on the present system of book-keeping, or providing any more certain checks. The resolution is to be sent to the Premier and city members.
Private information has been received that Mr Stanton, late manager of the Bank of Australasia, has been appointed general manager ot the City Bank, Sydney. ftotats Against Legislation. ReeFton, July 22. i A numerously-attended meeting was held at the County Chambers tonight to consider the proposed amended Mining Act, when the new clauses were unanimously condemned and a series of resolutions passed protesting against its adoption in its present form, and urging that the Bill be held over till next session. A large number of the residents enrolled themselves as a Mining Association to watch over mining interests and this Bill in particular. The class here are opposed to as reducing the scope of of labour by the imminent cancellation of a number of leases should the Bill become law. The resolutions will be wired to the members of the Goldfields Committee sitting on the Bill. There is a feeling of intense excitement here over the Bill.
