(press association.) Suicide of as Officer. Auckland, July 17. On Thursday last Lieutanont Phillip J. Hodges, &.N., a steerage pas senger by the s.s. Alameda for San Francisco, committed suicide by jumping overboard. The ship was at the time going fourteen knots, with Mt' from the south-west, with a high sea. A boat was lowered, but without success. After staying 20 minutes the steamer kept on her course. Hodges formerly belonged to H.M.S. Hyacinth, and was recently courtrmartialled and cashiered. He was very melancholy prior 10 committing suicide.
