i United Press Association.) The Totaliaator Tax ; Wellington, Satarday7 > ** s^w? The members of Parliament who were delegates to the recent Racing Club Conference waited on the.. Premier last night with reference to ',< the proposed tax on the totalisator. t Captain Russell, who represented the vie* s of the deputation, pointed oat the proposed tax would be very oppressive, and if it were enforced the Racing Clubs n-ust reduce the amount of their stakes, and this would conse* quently drive racehorse owners who ran for stakes alone off the turf altogether. Mr Ballance, in reply, said his sympathies were certainly with horse-racing, and he looked upon it as an old and legitimate sport. He would gladly give every consideration, to the various representations which had been made by the deputation, and if his necessities would permit it he hoped to be able to reduce the tax to H per cent as had been suggested in certain quarters. za&T*** ""■ Important Deputation.
Wellington, Saturday. # A deputation from the various agricultural and pastoral associations of the colony interviewed the Railway Commissieners this morning, and aßked that the charges for the conveyance of liye stock to the annual ahowi should be reduced. The member* of the deputation were Messrs Ball, «»•■•' ber of the Canterbury Association; Newman, member for Wellington) Rhodes, member South Canterbury; Forster-Pratt, Manawatu 3 and Bid* will, Wairarapa. It was pointed out that if a greater concession were madof shows would be much more succestfolf and it would eventually benefit tha "*""■ Commissioners as well as the breeders. Mr McKerrow, while recognising tnt importance of agricultural shows, r«« marked tbat the fares for conveying stock to these gatherings were inort liberal than in Great Britain. The matter would have to be looked into very carefully, as a reduction of charges might lead breeders to send their stock more for purposes of B*M' —~" ing it, than for exhibition.
