Death of aa old Settler. A death-dealing Court-Houae. IXVERGARGILL, July 16. Mr Wm. Johnston, of Wray's Bush, died yesterday at Eiverton from kidney trouble, aggravated by having to hang about the Supreme Court re« cently waiting as a witness. The want of accommodation in the building for jurors and witnesses is scandalous, there being {nothing but the street or a draughty corridor for their convenience. Mr Johnston is the second old resident whose death is traceable to the defective Court accommodation. Mr Johnston was a candidate for Wallace at the last election and the previous election. He was councillor and chairman of the Wallace County for years, and formerly represented the district in the Provincial Council. He retired from the contest before the poll at the general election. He has been thirty-six years in Otago, The Paraell Memorial. Chbistchurch, July 16. A very satisfactory meeting of the S.D. Parnell Memorial Committee was held to-night. Mr H. W. Potter, general secretary, made ac. explanation of the position, and was appointed local secretary, vice C. E. Briggs resigned. The offer of the central committee, Wellington, to guarantee £25 towards the expenses, was enthusiastically accepted. An offer of the Gulcher Company to supply 12 arc lights was accepted. The date of the demonstration was postponed to July 30. !
