AN OLD COLONIAL.
Another old identity has passed away in the person of Frederick Horsington, who died at the Wangauui Hospital on Saturday last. Deceased, who was 64 years of age, was at one time very well off, having amassed and expended many fortunes jjjjiag, «t residence in the colonies chequered career. Arriving in Melbourne at the latter end of the forties, endowed with a powerful physique, he, like many more, on the discovery of gold, went gold digging, and took an active part in the Eureka stockade riots, the diggers being led on by •' Peter,"' afterwards the Hon. P. Lalor, M.L.A., for many years speaker of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. On the discovering of gold at Chinaman's Flat and Forest Creek, " Fred" was among the first on the field i success following him everywhere. Bflßfrhe.was relieved of a large easily gotten gold at tha hands of Black Douglas," of bushranging fame, whose dark deeds on. the Black Forest are not forgot by old colonials. "Beforeparting with his gold " Fred " made a desperate fight, two of his mates being mortally wounded in the combat, while he escaped badly injured. At last be came to New Zealand and opened a large hostelry in Greymouth, where he prospered for some time. Eventually becoming dissipated—his only enemy being himself —coming to Wanganui.he started hawking fish, thereby earning a precarious liveliup to within a day of his death. The old man always boasted that he never threw himself upon charitable aid in hia life, thus showing a spirit that many might emulate with advantage. Being in indifferent health for years, he never gave in, his buoyancy of spirit keeping him up to the last.— Chronicle.
