The fortnightly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held in the Chambers last (Tuesday) evening, fchere being present ?"> Worship the Mayor (M?C, r A. Pownall) afiCrs Perry, Feist, Gapper, Miune, ' Hessey, Heron. Tum ; "Utw of the previous meeting having been outward correspondence was read. CORRESPONDENCE (INWARD). From Mr W. Carey, applying for permission to erect a verandah in front of his premises in Hall-street.— Application granted, subject to the approval of the Surveyor. From Messrs Koss and Co., stating that they would be willing to contribute the usual sum for the construction of a 12ft crossing in front of their premises.—lt was decided that the culvert be constructed on the usual terms.
From the Railway Commissioners with reference to the in Eenill-street.
From the executors in the estat of the late H. Bannister, offering frontage m Queen-street for the widening of Moss-street at £6 per foot.—Cr Hessey moved that a sum of £3 bo offered.—Cr Gapper seconded. —Carried.
From Joseph Heatly, .Dunedin, requesting the support of the Council in obtaining an amendment in the Bankruptcy Act.—deceived. From J. A. M'Kenzie and the Rev J. Dukes, requesting that their nimes be inserted on the Burgess 801 l The Mayor moved that the applications be granted, but in future no application for transfer be granted unless the Council is satisfied it is bona ficle.—Cr Gapper seconded.— Carried.
From the Cemetery Trustees, stating that a site' had been granted for a morgue and that £2O had been granted for the erection of the building. From the Eoad Board, refusing to maka a grant for a ward. Pound feus. The Poundkeeper reported receipts amounting to LI BsGd for the month. Works committee. The report of the meeting of the Works Committee was read and adopted. Gas committee. The report of the meeting of the Gas Committee was also read. The Mayor moved that gas fittings be provided in the same manner as in Dunedin, i- e., by payment of two shillings per month. Cr feist seconded. The motion was put and carried. Finance. The report of the meeting of the Finance Committee was read, and accounts as recommended passed for payment. Library. The action of the Library Committee in procuring new books was confirmed.
INSPECTOR OF NUISANCES. The Inspector of Nuisances reported that it was beyond hi 3 power to get the gorse on certain roads removed, and recommended that the Council undertake the work itself. The Overseer was instructed to clear the roads referred to. THE BALANCE SHEET. The consideration of the balance sheet was held oyer for a special meeting to be held on Tuesday next, on which date the estimates and rates for the ensuing year are to be dexlt with. THE BURGESS LIST. As no objections to the Burgess List had been received, the List was passed on the motion of the Mayor. ORDINARY. On the motion of Or Gapper it was resolved that the surplus of the timber from the sheathing of the Waipoua Bridge be offered to the County Council. The Council then adjourned.
