EARTHQUAKE.
Smart Shock at Maatorton.
The smartest shock of earthquake experienced in Masterton for years was felt at 10.55 last evening. The shake was preceded by a loud rumbling as of distant thunder, and the oscillation, which caused houses to sway and creak, and crockery to clatter, lasted for nearly a minute. The direction appeared to be from east to west. [By Telegraph.] Eketahuna, Monday. A severe shock of earthquake was felt shortly before eleven o'clock last night, which had a "scaring" effect upon residents generally. The tremor lasted for fully a minute. Heavy ram was falling immediately before the shake. Carterton, Monday. The heaviest earthquake experienced for some time was felt in Car terton last night a few minutes before eleven o'clock. The vibration was from North-East to South-West, and lasted some seconds. Wellington, Monday. A slight shook of earthquake was felt here at ten minutes to eleven lasl night. Grextown, Monday. A severe shock of earthquake was felt in Greytown last night at aboul ten minutes to 11 p.m.
