SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The monthly meeting of the W asterton School Committee was held in the Central Chambers last evening, the whole of the Commissioners being present.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Treasurer's statement showed a credit balance for the month of £i 7s lOd and a debit balance at date of £l4 4s 84
The Chairman stated he had replied to a circular from the Education Board with regard to scholarships, enclosing the resolution ot the Com.mittee.
The Town Lands Trust wrote, asking for a statement of the financial position of the Committee in view of the application for a grant.
A letter was read from the Education Board, stating that the question of erecting a side school would be considered as soon as it • was discovered what fuuds were available for such purposes. The Board also wrote, stating chat they could not make the grant of £63 as applied for. The additional grant for latrines would be made, but as regards the recent election, the hall expenses only would be provided. Finances. The Chairman suggested the appointment of a deputation to wait upon the Town Lands Trusteos in support of the application for a grant ot £63. It was decided th?t Messrs Beard, Williams and the Chairman wait upon the Trustees at their next meeting, and that a full statement of accounts be prepared. Calisthenic Exercises. Miss Keeling, mistress of the infant school, wrote stating that she had been instructed by Mr de Mey to apply to the Committee for thirty pairs ot dum bells. SECRETARY AND TREASURER. It was decided that the offices of Secretary and Treasurer be separated, and that the Chairman in future be Treasurer to the Committee. teachers' reports.
The head teacher reported 601 children on the roll, the average attendance 486, and the percentage 81. The attendance in some of the junior classes was rather low owing to the prevalence of colds. Miss Keeling reported 113 on the roll of the infant school, the average attendance being ninety. The play grounds were still in a bad state. General. Several accounts were presented, and passed for payment. Mr Easthope wfiis appointed visiting member, and the meeting adjourned.
