EDUCATION BOARD.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Education Board was held yesterday. Present—Messrs J. R. Blair (chairman 1 !, F. H. Fraser, W. W. McCardle, G. Beetham; W. C. Buchanan, M.H.R.. A. W, Brown, Rev. J. Patersori. and Dr Newman, M.H.R.

The pay-sheet, amounting to £BOB6 18a 5d was passed for payment".

In the absence of Dr Newman the Ghairman moved, that in the opinion of this Board each school should institute an Arbor Day for the purpose of planting the school grounds where practicable. The motion was seconded by Mr Beetham and carried.

The Chairman moved that applications be invited for the serviced of a competent carpenter at a wage of not more than £l5O per annum, for the purpose of effecting repairs to the schools belonging to the Board, Messrs Baetham, Buchanan, and M'Cardle thought that it would be better to have two carpenters, one for the city and. Jibe other fpr the Wairarapa. They thought it would be unwise to incur travelling expenses for the town carpenter journeying from town, Dr New« man and Mr Brown tmid that if a man was engaged solely for the Wairarapa a third would have to be employed for the Manawatu. Mr Buchanan remarked that the Board would not obtain a good carpenter, who would have to be eternally travelling away from home, for 10s' a day. Both the Chairman and Mr Brown expressed their conviction that very little difficulty would be experienced in getting a man for the wages mentioned, because it should be recollected that the pay would be for every day,, wet or fine. Mr Brown seconded the motion, which was agreed to. The Education Department wrote enquiring whether the Board would' take charge of the native school at Papawai. The Board decided to tpply fof further information before returning a definite 'reply. Mr F. Cox, of Feathersfion, wrote requesting the Board to complete the acre of ground adjoining the local school as agreed upon. No action was taken. The sum of £2 7s for alterations to latrijjes at tb£ Masterton school was jgraptefl."
