Business at a Standstill.

Sydney, June 10.

Business was at a standstill to-day, the eleotions absorbing all interest. There was tremendous excitement, and tbe polling waß unprecedented. The streets to-night are thronged The principal features in those elections which were decided to-day are the success of the Labour party and the infusion, of new blood. Twenty old members were rejected out of 52 Beatsj among them being Mr Dibbq at South Sydney, which he was contesting as well as another seat. He was sixth on the list. Among those returned are . Sir H, Partes, Messrs McMillan, KHeid, Barton, Bruce, Smith, Wise and Brunder, Those re-elected include Mr. : o,'Cpnnor, Postmaster-General/ and Messrs Abigail and Dibbs. The Labour candidates carried four seats at West f Sydney by overwhelming majorities, Mr Fitzgerald, who went Home as labour delegate during the strike, being at the head ol the poll. Glebe returned one, Redfernand Balmain four each. Mr' Ltisk,' formerly, a resident of New Zealand, was rejected at West Maitland. One electorate has not yet come in.

The following is the present stat9 ' of-parties, so far as can be estimated under existing complications:— Ministerialists, 23; Opposition, 22; Independent, 3. ■••■:■?. June 18. ~: . Carruthers, who held the position of Minister for Public Instruction, in the Parkes Government, was returned at the head of the poll, and had a majority of nearly three - thousand over the three successful labour candidates.
