HASTWELL.
(From Our Own Correspondent)
The weather of late in this district has been anything but pleasant. During the night it freezes, and through the day it rains. This makes it very dirty. It is almost impossible to get dryfooted to the Mangamahoe Post Office, and if the road is not soon repaired we will have to abandon all hopes of getting our mails during the winter months.
A petition has been signed by a number of settlers here, praying that a Post Office be established at Hustwell. I have no doubt we .will succeed.
A few years ago this settlement was a deuse forest. It was a grand place for sport, as there were plenty of pigeons and wild pigs. But now, the scene is changed. There is a large school, which is well attended, there being nearly seventy on the roll. There are also several nice residences' and no less than, three. sawmills There is no need for further sawmills, as it is well known that three-handed, is a game of "cut-throat," There appears to be no ranger here as a number of settlers are running their cattle in the long paddock. This should be put a stop to.
