ALFREDTON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The weather for the past week has been very bad _ not a fina day, nothing but rain, rain ! Through the slipshod conduct of our local Road Board, we have got to put up with more muddy roads. For instance, the Eketahuna to Alfredton road - would have been metalled, but our members did not like to put away the mud. And for our district road, it is a disgrace. They have in one particular spot gob a bit of metalling doue, about a ohain in length, For nearly the whole length they have a hole which they keep full of water in the summer time, so that they can kaye a swim if they require it. It is a pity to see ratepayers' money squandered. It would have taken one roan two hours to have cleaned out the .watertables, but they prefer to see the metal cut np and the water running across the road. And what good do | such men do to the district? The concerts and dances ate finished for the present, as no one seems inclined to come* forward and gwe the thing a start. I think the Christies put the set on one party ' for ever appearing again on the boards. Of course, high class manic and good singing some do not care for, and others prefer comic songs and step dancing. It is a pity in such a place as this people will not be sociable. The school is doing very well indeed; there are 18 childen attending regularly, end I believe some 21 on the roll. Not so bad !

Things in general are very . quiet. There is little or no work at present.as those who have got bush to fall will keep it for another two months before they start falling. Then they can reckon on good burns. Our storekeeper has managed to run his man to earth. And a good job, as it will be a lesson toothers who are a bit given to stealing.- \ The teetotal members who put up for the Licensing election did not gat it all their own way. Had they done so there would have been more drinking done on the sly, especially: by the supposed non-drinkers. I have heard of one who drinks more and spends less than those who go snd have a nip openly.
